Director of the Center for East Asian Studies
Five Colleges, Incorporated Beginning summer 2010 One‐year appointment, continuation contingent on external funding for subsequent years. Status: Full‐time; salaried; exempt. The Five College Consortium (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) invites applications for the leadership role in its Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS), which for 34 years has promoted knowledge of East Asia at the K‐12 and college levels. The Director manages and generates programs to support teaching about Asia in K‐12 schools, including leading and supervising a regional network of educators. The Director also builds relationships among faculty members and academic departments and programs at the college level, working with other consortium staff members to support teaching and research on Asia at the consortium institutions. The Director is responsible for generating external funding for the programs and staff of the Center. The new director will assess the CEAS collection of instructional support materials and resources and develop strategies to archive these materials and to ensure that the most valuable materials are optimally shared on‐line. Required Qualifications: • Experience in K‐12 teaching • Experience in designing teacher professional development seminars, institutes and/or workshops • Excellence in communication, team building, personnel management, and planning skills • Experience managing a budget and employee supervision • Fund‐raising experience • Willingness to travel regionally, nationally and internationally • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and evenings as needed • Willingness to keep abreast of trends in the fields of East Asian Studies and education Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with electronic communications in many forms, including development of web pages and other on‐line resources • Experience in a faculty or administrative role at a college or university • Prior fund‐raising experience in working with foundations, corporations, and government funding sources • Personal travel experience in East Asia For further details consult: www.fivecolleges.edu and www.smith.edu/FCCEAS .
