The USC U.S.-China Institute sponsored a conference in Feb. 2008 focusing on what the study of the history of China's foreign relations might offer contemporary policy makers. A distinguished group of historians, political scientists, and policy analysts participated. Harry Harding, former dean of the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University and one of America's top China watchers, delivered the keynote address. Harding discussed five ways in which "history matters" for contemporary foreign relations.
