Subject: ASDP Extends Deadlines for all Summer Programs

The Asian Studies Development Program is extending the deadlines for
the three summer programs to March 14th (postmark). If you have any
questions about the programs, please get in touch with Betty Buck
(Bucke@eastwestcenter.org; 808-944-7315), or Peter Hershock
(Hershocp@eastwestcenter.org; 808-944-7757). Sandy Osaki, Program
Secretary, can answer application questions
(Osakis@eastwestcenter.org; 808-944-7337).

The two residential institutes follow the tried and true
programmatic structure of many past ASDP institutes with presenters
selected for their competence as scholars and presenters. The China
field study is charting some new territory and promises to be
exciting as well as educational. The emphasis will be on the
Chinese environment and minorities, as well as Chinese culture and
societal changes.

Betty and Peter will be at the ASDP national meeting in Chicago and
will be glad to talk with anyone about these program and other ASDP
activities.

The three summer programs are:

The China Institute (May 19 through May 30, 2008). This is a new
ASDP program in terms of participants, but the content is similar
to our residential institutes. The participants will include
faculty from the US and from several Southeast Asian universities.
We think the opportunities for cross-cultural discussions on
Chinese culture and society will benefit both Americans and Asians,
giving them opportunities to learn along with and from each other.
The presenters include, among others, Henry Rosemont, Howard
Goldblatt, Peter Hershock, and Jungmin Seo. The calendar for the
program, which shows topics, presenters and activities, is on the
ASDP website. There is a $350 program fee and participants are
responsible for getting themselves to and from Hawaii, but housing
in Lincoln Hall, several meals and a modest stipend are provided by
the East-West Center.

Institute on Infusing East Asia into the Undergraduate Curriculum
(June 30 through July 18, 2008). Roger Ames, ASDP Co-director,
will direct the annual three-week institute will be on China and
Japan--our 18th since 1991. Presentations and discussions will
include culture, history, literature, art and contemporary issues.
There is also a focus on strategies for building Asian studies on
participants' campuses. The calendar for this program is also on
the ASDP website. The cost for participants is a $350 program fee
and getting themselves to and from Hawaii. ASDP will provide
housing in Lincoln Hall, a stipend and several meals.

China Field Study: Focus on Southwest China (June 3 through June 20,
2008). The field study will concentrate on Sichuan and Yunnan
Provinces. Sichuan University and Yunnan University are the host
institutions. The program will begin and end in Hong Kong, hosted
by the University of Hong Kong. For three days in Hong Kong, the
participants will meet with scholars, including Roger Ames who will
introduce Chinese culture, aspects of Southwest China and
contemporary Hong Kong. Participants will spend 5 days in Chengdu
and then 7 days in Yunnan, with time split between Kunming and
Lijiang. The program concludes with two nights in Hong Kong. The
director is Dr. Fred Lau, UH professor of Chinese ethnomusicology
and a regular presenter at ASDP programs. Cost: participants are
responsible for getting themselves to and from Hong Kong and a
$1,000 program fee. All travel from HK to and around Sichuan and
Yunnan provinces, housing, some meals and a modest stipend will be
provided by ASDP.
